Quick Portrait Photography Tips

Today I want to share with you some quick portrait photography tips. Portraits is my favorite type of photography. My goal is to bring out the best in my clients and using these three simple tips will help to improve your end result.

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”

  1. Look for the light. I try to always shoot into the light. That gives some really nice backlighting on your subject like in the picture above. You'll get that nice glow on your subject's hair. The time of day affects the lighting. Late afternoon/early evening gives the best light. First thing in the morning is good too.
  2. Know posing ... or at least have some good ideas on how to pose your client to flatter them the most. One rule I follow is 'If it bends, bend it'.
  3. Keep the background simple. Be aware of what's behind your client and use a higher dof to blur out what's there.
